The Cushing Conservation Area, located on Chestnut Street, was donated by Elizabeth and Harold Cushing in 1973. The area has a pond, as well as a number of springs and streams with small tributaries partly enclosed by thick woods. Those attributes, combined with heavy brush and swamp, provide good nesting places for waterfowl.
Soon after the donation, Land Trust members planted conifers around the pond and the Seekonk Garden Club established a variety of plantings throughout the area.
In 1993, the Gerie Zaretsky Memorial was established near the pond to honor the work of this past Seekonk Land Conservation Trust president. A path from Chestnut Street leads to the bench that was dedicated to her to celebrate her accomplishments in preserving land for the town of Seekonk. The plaque reads “Gerie Zaretsky, Friend of Seekonk.” A short stroll to the bench in late March or early April will take you to a sea of daffodils planted there.
